Online giant Amazon is expanding zero-exhaust emission deliveries in the UK, with its biggest ever order of electric heavy goods vehicles.

The company has also revealed its inaugural on-foot delivery service for customers, utilizing trolleys that can be replenished while in transit.

Amazon stated that these advancements will assist in removing conventional diesel vans and trucks from the roads, emphasizing that this initiative aligns with its climate pledge to reach net-zero carbon emissions in all its operations by 2040.

Nicola Fyfe from Amazon Logistics stated, “Reducing carbon emissions in our transportation network is crucial for us to meet our objective of attaining net-zero carbon emissions throughout our operations by 2040. Today’s announcement represents a significant and thrilling advancement in this endeavor.”

"The unprecedented order of electric heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) from us and the UK, coupled with the utilization of the UK’s electric rail network for transporting customer packages, and the introduction of on-foot restocking deliveries, in addition to our partners' electric van and e-cargo bike fleet, will enable us to fulfill more customer orders throughout our network while maintaining zero exhaust emissions."

“This is a victory for our clients, the planet, and our company.”

In the coming 18 months, Amazon will be integrating new electric trucks into its transportation fleet, including the Mercedes-Benz eActros and the Volvo FM Battery Electric models.

The new eHGVs are expected to transport more than 300 million packages a year in the UK with no exhaust emissions once fully operational.

The company announced plans to implement extra fast-charging facilities at various locations throughout the UK.

Amazon announced that over 20 million products purchased on its platform are anticipated to be transported via the UK's electric rail network this year, with intentions to extend their services to additional rail routes by year-end.

The new on-foot deliveries are being developed in partnership with the London Boroughs of Hackney, Westminster and Islington.

Future of roads minister Lilian Greenwood said: “Business has a crucial role to play in decarbonising our roads, and that’s why it’s fantastic to see Amazon place the UK’s biggest ever order of electric trucks, supported in part by the Government’s £200 million Zero Emission HGV And Infrastructure Demonstrator project.

“This adds to our £2.3 billion investment aimed at assisting both industries and consumers in transitioning to electric vehicles, which will bolster employment, draw in investments, and position Britain as a leader in clean energy.”
