A landmark Grimsby site once home to Ramsdens Superstore is set to be rejuvenated by Humber developer Wykeland Group.
The Hull-based commercial property specialist has purchased the site from Grimsby-based retail and cash and carry operator Ramsden Group and has already announced a deal to sell an acre of the site to major retailer Farmfoods, which is plotting a 15,000 sqft store with car parking.
Development of the frozen food and grocery store is subject to full planning permission, but the proposals could create between 15-20 jobs if successful. Meanwhile Wykeland has kept the remaining 1.8 acres and has already committed £100,000 to improving the site as it explores further regeneration efforts.
The development has been renamed Ramsden Park in a nod to its former occupiers, who opened the Ramsdens store in 1946. Wykeland and Ramsden Group had previously secured investment from Starbucks, which opened a 1,800 sqft drive-thru and cafe on the corner of the site, facing Cleethorpe Road and Park Street.
The site has existing planning approval for 65,000 sqft of retail development, with units ranging from 1,000 sqft to 10,000 sqft. Wykeland said it will also consider other viable options for development.
Jonathan Stubbs, Wykeland development director, said: "We’re pleased to announce we have acquired the site from Ramsden Group and have also concluded a deal, subject to planning consent, to bring in new investment from one of the UK’s most popular food retailers. As well as supporting Farmfoods through the planning process, we’ll be investing in improvements on site and exploring further development opportunities.
"We’re committed to the regeneration of this important location on the main route between Grimsby and Cleethorpes and keen to hear from investors who would like to work with us to realise its potential."
